Jimmy Johnson Graduated from the Thomas Jefferson Class of 1961. During his TJ years he played football as a linebacker and offensive guard. During his senior year he was an honorable mention Guard for the Yellow Jackets. Jimmy went on to the University of Arkansas, where he was named All-Southwest Conference as a defensive lineman. Later he became head coach at Oklahoma State University. Johnson's reputation as a winner would continue to build, culminating with a National Collegiate Championship at the University of Miami in 1989. He left college football to coach the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, taking the team from a one and fifteen record to two Super Bow wins over the Buffalo Bills in five years. Johnson left coaching and began a career as a television sports analyst before returning to the NFL as head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 1996. Jimmy Johnson was the first coach to win both a national collegiate championship and a national professional championship. |

Gary Hammond
Graduated with the Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1968 and was a second team All-State quarterback in 1967 and a high school All-American in 1968. Hammond was a three letterman at Southern Methodist University, was an All-SWC wide receiver as a sophomore, and repeated the honor as a running back his junior year. As a senior in 1971, Hammond was the conference's Player-of-the-Year as a quarterback. He led the SWC in receiving in both 1969 and 1970. He captained the football team in 1971, when they went to the Hula Bowl, also received the Kern Tips Memorial Trophy and the Fort Worth Kiwanis Club Ray McColloch Sportsmanship Award that year. Hammond is a member of the SMU Hall of Fame and received the SMU Alumni Association Leadership award in 1969, 1970, and 1971. He was the New York Jets' third-round draft pick in 1972 but missed the entire season because of knee surgery. Placed on waivers, he was picked up by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973 and played for the club through the 1976 season. He was NFL Alumni Association President in 1986-87 and in 1992 received the NFL Alumni Legends Award. |
